Part 1: Beginnings

THE TF TCG JOURNEY…

Written by Jason

Collecting Cards

I can’t remember the first time I saw Transformers TCG, but what I do remember is that I thought it was awesome.  As a kid growing up and watching Transformers on TV and playing with the toys this was a dream come true.  The art was incredible!  There were online videos explaining the game, and it seemed easy to pick up and very enjoyable to play.  Finally, a way to battle with bots using your hands!

Sometime prior to wave 5 I bought a booster box of wave 1 cards.  I gave each of my nephews somewhere between 5 and 10 backs as a gift.  At the time I had no idea how much I would grow to enjoy the game.

I began collecting cards for myself more aggressively during the long wait between Siege II and Titan Masters Attack.  Most of my buying was done on Ebay.  It didn’t take long to get hooked.  I remember my first super rare.  I had bought roughly 15 loose packs of wave 4, and I opened them and read the cards and tried to really enjoy the experience.  I was lucky enough to draw a Galactic Commander Optimus Prime!

I have 2 young boys, and I plan on this being one of our main family games/hobbies.  My wife enjoys playing the game as well.  I have been on a quest to collect enough cards so that we can all play.

I haven’t really ever seriously collected cards or played card games, so I made a lot of mistakes along the way including buying cards that were easy to get in booster boxes, paying too much for a card, and more.

Buyer’s Guide

When you are collecting my suggestion would be to shoot for 3 of each battle card and one of each character card.

This guide will cover standard Transformers TCG branded cards, binders, deck boxes, damage counters, play mats, etc.

Availability is becoming more and more scarce for booster boxes and packs especially wave 5.  Wave 5 Titan Masters Attack appears to have been a more limited run although I have no proof of that.  Booster boxes for this wave are going for $250+ at various sites.  Retail for booster boxes ran around $120 during the game when it was active.

If you are just getting into the game or just trying to round out your collection, I will share some places (as of January 2022) to buy Transformers TCG products.

This site has loose battle and character cards as well as booster packs and boxes.

This shop sells binders, deck boxes, play mats, sleeves, top loaders, and more at good prices.

The only thing at this site for a good price for Transformers TCG in my opinion is Wave 1 loose boosters are super cheap.  I bought a 100 recently shipped to the U.S. for around $130.

They have wave 1, 2, and 3 booster boxes as well as starter sets, Metroplex Deck, Soundwave vs. Blaster Deck, and Devastator deck.  At times they have big sales on these items.  Last Christmas time I was able to purchase a wave 2 booster box for about $35.

DA Card World still has booster boxes from each wave except wave 5.

Galactic Toys has wave 3 booster box listed on the website.

Amazon has a wide variety of items listed.  Most of these are from 3rd party sellers.

They have seemingly everything and anything Transformers TCG.

The Energon Edition comes with special printed Wave 1 cards, boosters, and dice in a nice package.  I wish you the best of luck finding one of these!  It is much easier to buy the separate pieces rather than the set at this time.

Sleeves?

The previous picture references the different sizes of cards in the game.  Ultra Pro and BCW both sell sleeves and top loaders for these cards.

Wossy Plays has a good YouTube video that covers products that span the game.

You can download all the cards from the WOTC sets here as well as many fan-made sets.  I know of at least one person that buys card stock and just prints out what they need.

I hope you enjoyed the article, and I really hope if you are looking for cards and accessories that this guide helps you on your way!  You don’t need a complete set of cards to play and enjoy the game.
